Mean, Median, Mode
The Mean is the average of a set of numbers.
The Median is the middle number in a set of numbers.
The Mode is the number that appears most often in a set of numbers
Examples:
Find the mean in 6, 10, 12, 18, 4. The first thing we need to do is add all the numbers together.
- 6 + 10 + 12 + 18 + 4 = 50
Then we divide 50 by the total number of numbers (which is 5).
- 50 / 5 = 10 which is the mean or average.
Find the median of 4, 10, 50, 12, 2.
First put the numbers in order: 2, 4, 10, 12, 50. Then look for the middle number. In this example 10 is the middle number so 10 is the median.
Find the mode in 4, 5, 10, 8, 2, 3, 1, 2, 10, 8, 5, 2, 6. Find the number that appears the most often. In this example the number that appears the most is 2, so the mode is 2.
